Mali will hold funeral services on Thursday for Defence Minister Sadio Camara, who was killed in a car bomb attack over the weekend, the country’s military authorities confirmed.

Camara, 47, died on Saturday when an explosive device targeted his home in Kati. The attack also killed his wife and two granddaughters.
The bombing occurred as part of a two-day offensive launched by jihadist militants and Tuareg separatist groups against the ruling military junta and Russian paramilitary forces supporting it.
Camara was regarded as a key figure behind the junta’s shift toward Russia after breaking ties with traditional Western allies, including former colonial power France. Russian Africa Corps mercenaries have since supported Malian forces in operations against insurgents in the country’s north.
In a national address on Tuesday, junta leader Assimi Goita described Camara as a “valiant officer” and said his “passage constitutes an immense loss” for Mali.
Authorities have declared two days of national mourning following the minister’s death.
